THE 1967 MR. AMERICA CONTEST

By Bill Star

Fourteen contestants, the second lowest number to ever enter the A.A.U. Mr. America Contest (only thirteen entered the 1942 contest) vied for the coveted crown in the air-conditioned Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in Columbus. Even though the quantity was lacking, the quality was certainly present.

When the final tally was taken, the winner by a margin of three points was Dennis Tinerino of Brooklyn , New York. Dennis is the '67 Junior Mr. America and the 1966 Mr. USA. He also added to his laurels by annexing the Most Muscular title. In second spot was Jim Haislop of Tampa, Florida. Observers remarked that this young man was the most improved in the entire contest. Jim placed fifth last year, but his 73½ points put him in solid second position this year. Jim was third in the Most Muscular category and won the "Best Abdominals" and "Best Back" subdivisions.

Will Whitaker of Chattanooga, Tennessee, edge out Ralph Kroger for third spot. Will was also very much improved over last season. He placed seventh in '66, but has obtained both muscularity and definition in the last 12 months. Ralph Kroger of Solana Beach, California, scored the same number of points as he did in 1966, but dropped one place in the standing, primarily because of the great improvement on the part of Haislop and Whitaker.

Boyer Coe, Lafayette, Louisiana, moved into the select number five postition. He was a great favorite with the crowd and took home both the "Best Arms" and the "Best Chest" subdivision trophies. Chris Dickerson of Los Angeles was a close sixth and was awarded the "Best Legs" award trophy.

The 1967 Mr. America is a deserving young man. Dennis has worked diligently to overcome his weaker points in the past year. He began Olympic lifting in order to obtain his athletic points, which he did, and in the process became quite an accomplished weightlifter. He finished sixth in York in 1966 and it has only been because of his determination and dedication that he has moved to the top of the physique world. The Mr. America Crown is in good hands.
